
We live in a world where women are often taught little about their bodies. When women try to ask questions about their bodies or sexuality, they can sometimes be met with shame or judgement from family, partners, friends, or society. As a result, many women go through life without fully understanding their bodies or continue to carry shame around their sexuality.
That is what makes Her, Body a space worth exploring. Here, those questions can be asked openly and without shame. I want to break down the science behind the female body and make complex topics easier to understand, from anatomy and hormones to sexuality, pleasure, and sexual health. Everything explored here will be approached with curiosity, research, and a desire to better understand the female body.
So, What Exactly Is an Orgasm?
An orgasm is a climax of sexual excitement, characterized, by feelings of pleasure centered in the genitals. That the general definition of what an orgasm is. But when we look more closely at female orgasm, the experience becomes far more complex.
For women, orgasm does not necessarily require sexual intercourse or even direct genital stimulation. Different forms of stimulation can produce an orgasmic response, including clitoral, vaginal, and nipple stimulation.
Is There More Than One Way to Experience an orgasm?
Although orgasm is often associated with sexual intercourse, it does not depend on one specific type of sexual activity or stimulation. The female body can respond to sexual simulation in ways that may be less commonly understood. Let’s take a closer look at how different forms of stimulation can lead to an orgasmic response.
- Clitoral Stimulation
The clitoris is a female sex organ. It is the most erogenous area and the primary anatomical source of female sexual pleasure.
The clitoris as no known function other than sexual pleasure, it plays no role in menstruation, conception and urination. The clitoris is one of the most important structures involved in female sexual pleasure and orgasm. It contains a dense network of sensory nerves, and its anatomy extends beyond the small external portion that is visible. when the clitoris is stimulated, those sensory nerves send information into the nervous system, contributing to sexual sensation and arousal.
Clitoral stimulation can happen in different ways, including touch, pressure, movement, or vibration. What feels pleasurable and what leads to orgasm can vary greatly from one woman to another. There is no single method or experience that applies to everyone.
And that’s the interesting part: orgasm doesn’t necessarily require sexual intercourse. A woman can experience orgasm though clitoral stimulation alone, which is one reason understanding the clitoris is so important when talking about female sexuality.

2. vaginal Stimulation:
Vaginal stimulation is one of those topics that can get confusing very quickly. We often hear the phrase ” vaginal orgasm” as though it is one clearly defined experience,its completely separate from every other type of orgasm. But women’s experiences are much more varied than that.
Some women report experiencing orgasm primarily through vaginal stimulation, while others find that vaginal penetration becomes more pleasurable when combined with clitoral stimulation. “In a large study of 3,017 women, researchers found that women used several different ways of changing vaginal penetration to make it more pleasurable, including adjusting the angle or depth of stimulation and combining vaginal penetration with clitoral stimulation.” (Hensel et al.,2021)
And then there is the experience itself.
In a study examining how women described different orgasm experiences, women who had experienced both clitoral and vaginal orgasms did not necessarily describe them in exactly the same way. On average, clitoral orgasms were described as sharper, easier, and more controllable, while vaginal orgasm was more often described as deeper, wilder, more pulsating, or extending for a longer time. Some women also described experiences that didn’t fit neatly into either category, including mixed clitoral-vaginal and whole-body orgasms.
But is a vaginal orgasm completely separate from a clitoral orgasm? It’s more complicated than that. The clitoris extends internally and is connected to surrounding tissues and sensory pathways, so different forms of stimulation can overlap. Researchers have also found that women describe their experiences differently, with some describing vaginal orgasms as deeper or more extended than clitoral orgasms. (Dienberg et al.,2024)
Squirting: is another part of female sexual response that is often surrounded by confusion. It refers to release of fluid through the urethra during sexual stimulation or arousal. Research suggests that the fluid can involve contributions from the Skene’s glands and the bladder, and its composition is different from ordinary vaginal lubrication.
Importantly, Squirting isn’t the same thing as an orgasm. Some women experience it during orgasm, while others may experience it separately from orgasm. And not every women squirt, and there is absolutely no requirement for it to happen for an orgasm or sexual experience to be “real.”
3. Nipple Stimulation:
And now for one that might surprise you: yes, nipple stimulation can be associated with orgasm for some women.
The nipples are not part of the reproductive organs, but they are highly sensory areas of the body. Research using FMRI has found that nipple stimulation can activate the genital sensory cortex of the brain, the same general sensory region involved in processing genital stimulation. Researchers have suggested that this provides a neurological explanation for why nipple stimulation can sometimes produce sexual arousal and, for some women, orgasm.
This is a fascinating reminder that sexual response isn’t confined to the genitals. The brain is constantly interpreting signals from different parts of the body, and those signals can contribute to sexual pleasure.

There isn’t one ” right” way to experience an orgasm. The interesting question is what happens inside the body and brain when these different sensations become and orgasm.
What Happens in your Brain During an orgasm?
You might think the story ends once stimulation reaches the right place. It doesn’t. Your brain is very much part of the experience.
When orgasm occurs, activity increases across a number of brain regions involved in sensation, movement, reward, emotion, and automatic functions. Brain-imaging studies in women have found activity in areas including the hypothalamus, amygdala, insula, anterior cingulate cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, and parts of the brainstem. In other words, there isn’t one tiny ” orgasm button” in the brain–orgasm involves a whole network working together.
One particularly interesting finding is that brain activity builds as orgasm approaches, reaches a peak around orgasm, and then decreases afterward.” A small FMRI study of 10 women found increased activity across sensory, motor, reward, frontal-cortical, and brainstem regions during orgasm.”
Orgasm also involves brain systems associated with reward and motivation. Researchers have observed activity in areas such as the nucleus accumbens and ventral tegmental area, which are part of the brain’s reward circuitry. Dopamine is one of the neurotransmitters involved in these pathways and is associated with motivation, reward, and sexual behavior.
And then there’s oxytocin. Sexual stimulation and orgasm are associated with changes in oxytocin, a hormone/neuropeptide involved in several physiological and social processes. It’s tempting to call oxytocin the ” love hormone” but its actual role is much more complicated than that catchy nickname suggests.
The body’s endogenous opioid system, which includes naturally produced opioid peptides such as endorphins, is also thought to contribute to pleasure and reward. Researchers are still working out exactly how these different chemical systems interact during orgasm.
And what happens after?
Once orgasm ends, brain activity doesn’t simply switch off. The heightened activity associated with orgasm declines, while the body begins returning toward its usual state. This transition can be accompanied by feelings of relaxation, satisfaction, or sleepiness, although everyone’s experience is different. Research on female orgasm is still limited compared with many other areas of neuroscience, so there is a lot we don’t yet know.
The orgasm may begin with stimulation somewhere in the body, but the experience involves the whole nervous system. Your body sends the signals, your spinal cord helps carry and coordinate them, and your brain interprets and integrates those signals into the experience we recognize as pleasure and orgasm.
How Can Orgasm Affect Your Mind?
Orgasm isn’t just something that happens to your body. Your brain is along for the ride too. The changes that happen during and after orgasm involve several systems connected to reward, pleasure, and emotional well-being. Research has found associations between orgasmic functioning and greater psychological well-being and lower psychological distress, although most of the available research is correlational, meaning we can’t say that orgasm itself causes better mental health.
Stress & Relaxation
That relaxed feeling after orgasm isn’t necessarily just in your head. Sexual activity and orgasm are accompanied by changes in hormones and neurochemical systems involved in arousal and recovery. Some women may experience a sense of calm or relaxation afterward, although the effect isn’t the same for everyone. Research also shows that stress itself can affect women’s sexual functioning, so the relationship between stress and sexuality can work in both directions.
Mood
Ever notice that just feel good afterward?
The brain’s reward systems are heavily involved in sexual pleasure, and orgasm has been associated with positive feelings and greater sexual satisfaction. More broadly, research links sexual health, including orgasmic functioning, with psychological well-being. But again, orgasm shouldn’t be treated as a cure for anxiety, depression, or other mental-health conditions.
Why Do Some People Feel Sleepy?
That post-orgasm” I could literally fall asleep right now” feeling is something many people report. The period after orgasm involves physiological changes as the body moves away from heightened sexual arousal. Hormonal and neurochemical changes may contribute to relaxation and sleepiness, although people’s experiences differ.
What About Pain?
Sexual stimulation and orgasm have also been studied in relation to pain perception. Some research suggests that sexual activity may temporarily alter how pain is experienced, although the evidence isn’t strong enough to say that orgasm is a treatment for pain. Think of it as an interesting physiological effect that researchers are still trying to understand, not a painkiller replacement.
The Bigger Picture
The most important thing to remember is that there isn’t one universal “orgasm effect” Some women may feel relaxed, some energized, some sleepy, and some may not notice much of a change at all. Your experience can also be influenced by stress, Hormones, relationships, expectations, and your overall mental state.
And that’s part of why understanding your body matters: knowing what is normal for you is just as important as knowing what science says is normal.
What Did Women Tell Her, Body?
Before writing this article, I wanted to hear directly from women about how they understand and experience orgasm. I created an anonymous google form survey to learn about the different ways women experience pleasure, what they were taught about their bodies, and whether learning more about sexuality changed how they understood themselves.
One thing became clear very quickly: there isn’t one universal experience.
Some participants described experiencing orgasm primarily on their own, while others had experienced it with a partner. Some had not experienced orgasm at all. others described learning what felt good to them first and then finding it easier to communicate those preferences with a partner.
Another pattern stood out: sex and orgasm were often closely connected in how participants understood the experience. For some women, orgasm was something they primarily associated with sexual activity or being with a partner, while others discovered that they could experience pleasure on their own, without a sexual partner.
What I found especially interesting was how strongly knowledge influenced confidence. Participants described learning about sexuality and their bodies as something that helped them better understand themselves, their preferences, and their experiences.
And perhaps that’s the most important thing I took away from these responses: Understanding your body isn’t simply about knowing anatomy. It’s also about being able to recognize, understand, and communicate what your body is experiencing.
A note about the survey
This was small, anonymous exploratory survey and is intended to highlight individual perspectives and generate questions, not to represent the experiences of all women.
What We Still Don’t Know
For everything we do know about orgasm, there is still a lot we are learning. Female sexual response is complex, and there isn’t one explanation that can describe every woman’s experience.
Researchers are still studying how different parts of the body communicate with the brain, why some women experience orgasm easily while others don’t, and how factors like stress, hormones, relationships, emotions, and personal experiences can influence sexual pleasure.
There is also a lot we can learn by listening to women themselves. Our bodies don’t always fit neatly into categories, and that okay.
Understanding Your Body Matters
Maybe the biggest lesson isn’t about how to have an orgasm. It’s about knowing that your body is worth understanding.
You don’t have to experience pleasure the same way another woman does. You don’t have to feel ashamed because you don’t know something about your anatomy. And you don’t have to feel pressured to experience anything just because someone else does.
The more we understand our bodies, the easier it becomes to recognize what is normal for us, ask questions, communicate our needs, and make informed decisions about our sexual health.
Knowledge doesn’t take away the mystery of your body– it gives you the confidence to live in it.
